(September 1st, open to everyone who's not in "Look at Me, Look at Me" because these two threads take place at the same time.)
"Oh that's interesting."
Nerdy youth was sitting in the garden reading deeply into a book he'd picked up in Beast's library. He'd been here a day and already the school was fascinating him; the library being his favorite spot. There were so many books on stars it was crazy. Black holes, supernovas, red dwarves, it was all terribly fascinating to the son of an astronomer and a space captain.
Taking a pencil out of his pocket protector, Dex wrote some notes on a piece of paper next to him. He bit his lip and wrote something again. He was distracted and wouldn't have noticed a soul walk past him.

"What are you reading?"
Etoile usually wasn't quite so nosy, but her little trip into the garden had been sort of lonely up until that point and she wanted someone to talk to. She'd heard Dexter talking to himself and that had led her to come over to where he was sitting. At that moment she was looking over his shoulder and trying to find out just what it was he was reading. Etoile still wasn't familiar with who everyone at the academy was, so of course Dexter was a new face. She wanted to get to know him better. Not just because he was new, but also because she hadn't really gotten to know very many other students until then.

Dex looked up from his book and his brown eyes flashed open. Dex had always had trouble talking to girls, especially pretty girls. His stutter never actually flared up unless he was around a pretty girl. He hadn't heard her approach so her question caught him off guard giving the nervous 20 year old no time to prepare. He looked up at her, adjusted his glasses in a very dorky manner with one hand and shut his mouth promptly. He peered at his book and his notes and looked back up at the girl. She seemed nice enough, not about to attack him for any of his weird little habits.
"Uh, its a uh book on the uh the stars," he stammered, adjusting his glasses again, "I kind of like stars." Wow. That was smooth. He looked towards the floor.
"My name's Dexter," he said, "You can call me Dex if you want. It's what my friends would call me if I...uh..." He picked up the book beside him and place it on his lap in case she wanted to sit down. "Wh-wh-what's your name?"

"You like stars, too?" Etoile asked. She hadn't met very many people that seemed to share her interest in the heavenly bodies above them. Maybe that was because she was the only daughter of an actual star, if one was to assume that Evangeline really had been a firefly that passed on. Either way, Etoile could feel that she was going to like Dexter already if they shared at least some common ground. She skirted around him, mostly so that he could see her better, and proceeded to sit down beside him as a little smile formed on her face. "I was beginning to think I was the only one weird enough to be interested in the night sky. I'm glad that's not the case, though." she said.
Ah... right. She still needed to introduce herself. "I'm Etoile. It's nice to meet you, Dex." she said. Now the real question was what Dexter was doing all on his own. Surely he had some friends. Or had the pair of them been lucky enough to end up on their own in the garden? Either way, Etoile was glad to have a chance for a one-on-one session with someone before anyone else could barge in. "Do you always come here to read alone? Or is this a special occasion?" she asked.

He stiffened slightly as the girl did indeed sit next to him. His mouth hung open a little as he stared, blinking slowly behind his black rimmed frames. "It's not weird," he blurted out, "I mean g-g-granted a lot of stuff I d-d-do is weird b-but you s-seem per-perfectly normal to m-me." He nearly face palmed. That damn stutter. Thanks Dad, really appreciate that. "M-my Dad and Mum are aliens s-so that might have s-something t'do with it."
He sat up, a smile slipping onto his own lips. "N-nice to meet you, Etoile. That's french right?" He may have been a boy genius but that didn't mean he was a language expert.
"I read alone al-l-lot," he mumbled, "I don't have any friends really, plus I just got here." He peered at her. "D-D-Did you just get here t-t-too?"

She'd be lying if she said she wasn't relieved that Dexter didn't think she was weird. Her parents and older siblings had always thought her interest in the stars was a bit strange. Sure her younger sister hadn't been bothered by it, but with the rest of her family being so uncertain of why she was interested in the stars she thought that maybe it was a little odd. Maybe she had been right all along in coming to the academy. Already she was finding people that shared common ground with her, and it was making her feel very at home.
Dexter's parentage didn't seem to surprise her by that point. Having a rather strange parentage herself, she guessed that anything was possible in terms of who was related to whom at the school. "So your parents are aliens? Mine are a firefly and a star. Or should I say two stars? I'm not even really sure." Etoile admitted. It depended on whether or not Ray was even alive wherever he was. She somehow doubted that he was, but there was always hope, right? In answer to Dexter's question about how long she'd been there, she gave a little nod. "Yeah, I only just got here recently. So far I'm liking this place a lot. What about you?" she asked.

"Ray and Evangeline?" Disney fan to the end, Dexter had spent every penny he'd had as a kid on Disney movies, plush he had a haul of Disney stuffed animals on his bed at home. Princess and the Frog was right up there with the rest and the only Disney characters he knew of that were a firefly and a star. He smiled softly. "Sorry, but that's cool. My parents are from a long underrated Disney film. Treasure Planet." He grinned sheepishly at her.
Rubbing his hair slightly with a hand, he shrugged. "It's not college, that's for sure," he mused, "Only time will tell I guess. So far the library's been a jackpot." He sheepishly looked towards the ground. "I'm a bit of a geek if you couldn't tell..."

"Yep, that's them." Etoile replied. She'd be lying again if she said she wasn't proud of her heritage, either. She'd watched a few Disney movies before even coming out to the academy and had fallen in love with The Princess and the Frog. Ray in particular had been a favorite character of hers, and not just because they were related. "I probably should have figured it out when I put together what my name is the French word for. But I guess we all have our slow moments." she said. That had been all her parents had told her, just that her name meant star. Beyond that they didn't seem to know if her name had any special meaning.
"So... think it means anything? Us meeting like this, I mean. It can't just be a coincidence that both of us are connected to space like this." she said after a moment. Maybe she was going out on a limb, but Etoile liked to think that maybe there was such a thing as fate. Or maybe she was just naive. Whatever the case, she wanted to think that maybe there was some special reason she had met Dexter. ...Then again, it could have just been a coincidence and nothing more.

"Right," he said with a nervous chuckle, "At least your name is subtle. Doppler is a bit on the nose w-w-wouldn't you s-s-say?" The stutter was still there just hiding for a while. He blinked behind his glasses at the girl before him, lowering his head slightly and shyly. He blushed slightly when she suggested that them meeting was something like fate. He didn't believe in fate, most sciencey types didn't but he didn't want to discourage the girl next to him. So he shrugged and left his sheepish, nervous smile on his face as he brought a pair of fingers up to adjust his glasses.
"I-I'm not s-s-sure," he said, "M-M-maybe." He blinked softly and looked out at the sky. Maybe she'd like to step out that night and watch the stars with him? It was something he loved doing even as a kid. "M-m-maybe y-y-you'd l-like t-to..." He trailed off and bit his lip. Better not ask, better keep his mouth shut.

Etoile blinked, green eyes filling slowly with curiosity at his stuttering, and listened as he spoke. She probably should have guessed that not everyone would readily believe in fate and such... but she couldn't help but wonder. For the moment, though, she decided to push the thought aside and worry about it at another opportunity. Right then Etoile wanted to just enjoy herself with Dexter before something stupid possibly happened. She wanted to ask if he was all right, as the stuttering seemed to be worsening as the conversation went on, but something prevented her from doing so. His unfinished question finally prompted her to speak again.
"Like to... what?" Etoile asked. Now she was curious. Did he want to do something with her at some point? She had to admit that it was cute how nervous he seemed, though she did want him to get on with it. "You don't have to be nervous. I'm not going to bite your head off or anything for making a suggestion." she said.

"Uhhhh...." He froze. You'd honestly never know he was that intelligent by the way he was speaking with a stutter and terrible diction. He nearly face palmed. Lowering his head and blushing profusely, the youth peeked out of the corner of his eyes towards Etoile. "Maybe...you'd like t-t-t-to...l-l-look at the st-st-stars with me?" He turned away just at that moment, afraid of her reaction. Though she seemed friendly, girls had a nasty habit of recoiling in disgust when he asked them to do anything with him. All those pretty girls in school who he'd done their homework for them would laugh or jump in with an 'ewww no thank you' when he'd ask them to go to the movies with him or go to the planetarium for a show. So he bit his lip, staring away from her, fidgeting with his glasses nervously.

"You mean like... go stargazing together?" Etoile asked. The idea wasn't foreign to her. Once in a while she would ask guys from her school if they wanted to do the same, but none had appeared all that interested. Now there was a guy, Dexter, offering to do the very same thing with her. How could she say no when it was one of her favorite things to do? Etoile's face lit up and she nodded eagerly. Of course she wanted to go! What better way to get to know one another than by doing something they loved together?
"I'd love to go! It'd be so much fun, Dex." she said. Inwardly she was once again entertaining the idea of seeking out stars that resembled her mother and father, but it sounded silly. Too silly to say out loud, she was sure.

Dex's face broke out into a crazy grin. She'd accepted? "Really?" he blurted out, "You wanna be seen with me?" He shrunk as those words came out of his mouth. "That's not what I meant to say! Not to be seen with me, you know like seen with me, but I mean like seen being with me-no! That's not what I meant either! GAH!" The nervous youth brought his hand up to his mouth and gnawed on his index finger nervously. He leaned backwards on the bench and accidentally bumped Etoile's arm with his own, brushing up against her skin. It caused him to have a mini spaz attack which resulted in him ending up slipping off the bench and onto his butt on the stone of the garden. His book also took a tumble and landed on his lap.
"Oh brother," he mumbled to himself, "Uh...I'm...not this much of a spaz all the time you know..." He bit his lip and just sat there waiting for her to get up and leave.

Etoile just giggled. The spaz attack, while cute, was probably called for since it seemed like he didn't get taken up on his offers very often. Etoile could understand that. She was pretty, but there was no denying that she probably wasn't all that interesting beyond her love of the stars. "It's fine. I probably would have freaked if I were in your shoes, too. I mean... well, not very many people where I'm from would have been interested in even offering to go stargazing. I had to drag my brother and sisters with me when we went." Etoile said. She'd been the odd one. The odd stargazer dreaming of finding something that probably wasn't even up there. Maybe that was how she and her firefly father were alike.
"Don't worry so much, Dex. I still want to be your friend. Really." Etoile told him. She wouldn't have made that up even if she wanted to. She was kind, or so she'd been told by her family, so hurting people wasn't really in her nature. That included Dexter.

Dex lifted his head and smiled softly, blushing brightly. He adjusted his glasses again and stood, placing his book down on the bench next to him. He sat on the edge of the bench next to Etoile. "I like to look at the stars," he said with a cluck, "Y'know, like, not just because my parents are y'know aliens. but just because...it makes me feel..." He upturned his head towards the sky and huffed. He turned towards Etoile and smiled.
"Sorry, I'm not a nutball, I promise," he said, "I'm glad you want to be my friend. I don't have very many friends at home or ever that aren't y'know online or in a comic book store." He rubbed the back of his head. "I'm sorry I'm talking so much," he said, "S-s-s-so, t-t-t-t-tell me about y-y-y-y-your s-s-s-self, E-E-E-Etoile!"
